Slytherin does not = evil. Evil does not = Slytherin. Slytherin = sly, cunning, mischevious, vain, ambitious, etc. That often = evil, but just because you belong in Slytherin that doesnt mean your evil!
Gryffindors are also often thought of as "good" Pettigrew was a Gryffindor! Look at what a little rat he turned out to be. (okay, bad pun) Gryffindors are brave and loyal, but they also are rash and often stupid. They tend to not think things through.
Every house has good and bad in about equal measure, but simply because the books are written from the perspective of a Gryffindor, people aren't tolerant of Slytherins, because they say all Slytherins are intolerant! yeah right!
